The industrial area of Dreispitz is being transformed into an urban space with new universities and housing. The current traffic system, designed for heavy trucks and trains, lacks the human scale needed for these changes. A map of Basel’s cycle routes reveals Dreispitz’s lack of bicycle facilities compared to other university areas in the city. The goal is to promote cycling in this new university district, ensuring safe travel while providing several resting and parking spots as well as a central hub for cyclists to gather and train. Based on research of current and future hotspots in the site, the main bicycle parking hub will be situated near the new universities with smaller parking areas distributed throughout the district built with reused elements taken from the Zircular catalog. The plan includes repurposing the existing garage along Frankfurt Strasse as the main hub, offering the necessary 4000 bike parking spots for new students and employees. Additionally, a velodrome and an open-air sports area will be created above the garage, providing exercise space with views of Basel.
